Any sound debate on competitiveness requires access and availability of reliable, updated and refined data and indicators. As such, the continuous development of new data sources and analytical methodologies, as well as technological improvements in data gathering and accessibility, remain key issues for both policymaking and research.

On 28 January Bruegel is launching its latest Blueprint: Measuring competitiveness in Europe: resource allocation, granularity and trade, edited by Carlo Altomonte and Gábor Békés. This Blueprint stems from research made in the frame of the MAPCOMPETE project that assessed the data availability and requirements for the analysis of competitiveness in the EU.

The chapters of the Blueprint provide some concrete examples from recent advances in the analysis of competitiveness relying on either novel datasets, or novel analytical methodologies, or both. The book’s methodology and findings also make it clear that there is a need for an improved institutional setup / data infrastructure able to regularly measure cross-developments in competitiveness within the euro area also exploiting firm-level data, an infrastructure without which any serious debate on competitiveness is hampered.
