The state of African Women

Aid and Development
EC development
Date: Friday, 12 October 2018

Venue: Europaid - Ground floor  |  City: Bruxelles

Mapping the gap between policy and reality

Achieving full gender equality in all spheres of life is a critical element in realising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The African legal framework for the protection of women’s rights, including the Maputo Protocol and the Maputo Plan of Action, is widely recognised as ambitious. However, in practice there are still gaps in its implementation and monitoring. The recently launched ‘State of African Women Report’, which is part of the EU Funded project the State of the African Woman Campaign, delivers a review of the current status of continental norms protecting women’s rights and their ratification in different countries of four African sub-regions. It aims to provide more insight into what needs to be done to accelerate implementation, monitoring and reporting on key rights instruments and political commitments regarding women’s rights.
