Free Public Lecture Series - Prof. David Herd
Registration: https://herd24oct.eventbrite.com
In 2018 a coalition led by the NGO Refugee Action called on the UK government to Lift the Ban. The ban in question is the prohibition that prevents the person who has claimed asylum in the UK from seeking employment. By going back to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to a series of associated postwar texts, this lecture considers what we are calling for when we call for the asylum seeker’s right to work, and how such a right can be politically transformative.
David Herd is poet, critic and activist. His work on the politics of movement has been widely published in Europe and America and he is currently writing a book entitled Making Space for the Human: Persons, Non-Persons, Movement in the Postwar World. He is Professor of Modern Literature at the University of Kent and co-organiser of the project Refugee Tales.
