How can researchers navigate secrecy in their fieldwork, when they encounter confidential material, closed-off quarters or bureaucratic rebuffs? This is a particular challenge for researchers in the security field, which is by nature secretive and difficult to access. This talk presents and discusses our book Secrecy and Methods in Security Studies, that analyses the challenges of secrecy in security research, and develops a set of methods to navigate, encircle and work with secrecy (co-edited with Esmé Bosma and Polly Pallister-Wilkins). The book sets out new understandings of secrecy, and shows how secrecy itself can be made productive to research analysis. Particularly, the talk zooms in on ways of writing with secrecy - that do not purely see secrecy as a barrier to be overcome, but that seek to attend to the absent in ethically reflexive ways of academic writing.

Marieke de Goede is Professor of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, where she currently holds an ERC Consolidator Grant FOLLOW: Following the Money from Transaction to Trial (www.projectfollow.org). De Goede’s research focuses on counter-terrorism and security practices in Europe, with a specific attention to the way in which financial data become used for security decisions. De Goede is author of (i.a.) Speculative Security (University of Minnesota Press) and co-editor of the special issue on ‘The Politics of the List,’ Environment and Planning D: Society and Space. De Goede was Associate Editor of Security Dialogue until 2019, and is a member of the Governing Board of the European International Studies Association (EISA).
