ECIPE Seminar: The Reform of Special and Differential Treatment in the WTO – Is Trump onto something?

Trade
original-7
Date: Monday, 07 October 2019 14:00 - 15:30

Venue: ECIPE Office, Av des Arts 40, 6th floor, 1040 Brussels

We invite you to join a discussion with Inu Manak (The Cato Institute) and Myrto Zambarta (European Commission) on the development dimension in trade.

The World Trade Organization faces an institutional crisis. Describing the system as unfair, President Donald Trump has focused significant attention on overhauling the WTO. One of the many areas he identified for reform is "special and differential treatment" for developing countries. The "special and differential treatment" has been a feature of the system since its early founding but has remained contested by developed and developing countries alike.

  • What is the role of the development dimension in resolving the WTO institutional crisis?
  • How can the system be reformed to meet developing countries demands and satisfy other members of the WTO?
  • What is the European perspective and can the EU work together with the US to reform the system?

Programme:

Inu Manak, Visiting Fellow at the Cato Institute will present a recent study she co-authored with James Bacchus on the differential treatment in trade.

Myrto ZambartaHead of Unit at the European Commission, Directorate General for Trade, will provide comments and present European perspective.

The event will be moderated by Maurice Fermont, Advisor at BusinessEurope.
