Forests are increasingly under pressure from agricultural expansion to satisfy the growing demand for food, feed, and fuel. Tackling global forest loss and degradation is a recurrent priority in the EU’s policy agenda. Various measures have been implemented to address this issue, among others the EU support to REDD+ [1] in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. REDD+ incentives aim to compensate (in part) the opportunity costs of the foregone investments of converting forests into agricultural land. The two presentations provide an update on REDD+ state of play ahead of COP21 and the efforts undertaken by Brazil and Cote d’Ivoire to decouple agricultural growth from deforestation.
