Since the mid-1970s, Soviet popular culture is increasingly concerned with the new class hierarchies, which constitute the Soviet version of consumer society. The resulting neoliberal ideology, promoting individual success and traditional gender roles, foreclose any progressive reforms of Soviet socialism and pave the way towards the conservative hegemony of the early twenty-first century.

Viacheslav Morozov is Professor of EU-Russia Studies at the University of Tartu, Estonia. He is a member of Academia Europaea, chair of the Program Committee of the Annual Tartu Conference on Russian and East European Studies, and country editor for USSR/Russia in the Making Identity Count project.
