ABOUT THE EVENT
The European Union has a long track record of ensuring and promoting human rights. Even in the light of some member states currently weakening human and especially civil rights, continuous advocacy through voters, politicians and civil society continue to strive to uphold them in an effort to establish the EU as global human rights beacon. In this role, the EU has already shown its influence in promoting democratisation, rule of law and human rights abroad, mainly through its economic leverage in trade deals.
This event will explore the case of Cambodia as current example of a regime testing these mechanisms. With only a few days away from a decision on the Everything But Arms agreement, Cambodia's privileged trade preferences with the EU could be suspended, thus pressuring the authoritarian regime in Phnom Penh to make concessions towards the opposition and pave the way for democratisation and human rights.
