Venue: Estonia
Known in Estonian as 'Tasiseseisvumispäev', this public holiday is always celebrated on 20 August.
Following the growth of a strong independence movement in the late 1980s, Estonia officially declared its independence from the former Soviet Republic on 20 August 1991.
At that time, Latvia and Lithuania had also declared their independence from the crumbling USSR.
By 6 September, independence had been formally recognised by the former Soviet Union.
