Advanced biofuels from waste and residues: the key to achieving ambitious and sustainable transport decarbonisation with RED II

Dinner debate

The reduction of emissions in road transport, shipping and aviation is a strong focus of the Paris Climate Agreement and the EU 2030 Climate and Energy Framework. A range of alternative fuel solutions are needed to decarbonise the transport sector between 2020 and 2030 in ways that are also technology neutral and market-driven.

The current proposal on the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive includes the use of high-quality advanced biofuels which meet strict sustainability criteria and reduce lifecycle emissions significantly. However, it would be necessary to ensure that the definition of advanced biofuels that the Commission has put forward includes all innovative and sustainable biofuels processed from wastes and residues.

The Commission’s proposal also recognises the need to provide extra incentives for the use of high quality biofuels in aviation, which is one of the only viable solutions for reducing the high carbon intensity of this sector. Therefore, further support should be considered to commercialise such biofuels and trigger a real green revolution in aviation.

Matti Lievonen, CEO of NESTE, the world’s leading supplier of renewable diesel, will discuss these issues as we debate the future of biofuels in transport in the context of the future Renewable Energy Directive.

It would be a pleasure for us to welcome you to this event.
