October Project of the month - Food Secure

About FOODSECURE

Sustainable food security is one of the most pressing issues in the world. The number of people on our planet is growing. Agriculture has to produce more food on less resource. Furthermore, farmers are facing increasingly volatile and integrated markets for both input and output. Food price spikes like in 2008 or 2011 threaten particularly the poor people, whose adaptation capacity is limited.

Thus, the FOODSECURE project was created. It is the first research project to analyze the global food complex systematically. During the four year period, FOODSECURE-researcher explored new datasets and modelled future paths for the global food system. They improved methods in working with stakeholders on the challenges in food and nutrition security. The research volume exceeds 10 million Euros. With a research contribution of 8 million Euro, it is the most ambitious research project on global food and nutrition security funded by the European Commission under the 7th framework program.

Outcomes

  • FOODSECURE researchers identified the drivers of hunger and malnutrition, across scales, from global to household or individual levels.

  • Sustainable food security must be built on climate and global change-resilient food systems: FOODSECURE highlights and assesses the linkages between food and nutrition security and societal, economic or environmental global change, to show pathways for a better global food and nutrition system.

  • Boosting innovation and investment, while empowering communities, is an important part of the set of solutions. FOODSECURE reflects on and shares visions about the role of innovation in agriculture, food and nutrition and related fields, to contribute to a science roadmap for enhancing Food and Nutrition Security (FNS).

Final Conference

  • After four years of extensive research, the scientists from 13 countries are delivering a compilation of their main results and messages at the final conference in Brussels, October 12, 2016. In sessions and panels the results will be presented and discussed. The registration for the final conference is still possible: scic.ec.europa.eu/fmi/ezreg/FOODSECURITY2016/start
