FRAME is a large-scale, collaborative research project funded by the European Commission and conducted by 19 research institutes from around the world. Their research focuses on the contribution of the EU’s internal and external policies to the promotion of human rights worldwide. The FRAME project has kicked off on 1 May 2013 and will end on 30 April 2017.
The FRAME project has produced an impressive and diverse array of research results and policy recommendations. The output comprises comprehensive reports, policy briefs, academic articles, blogs, conferences, workshops, briefings, a MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) etc. All of this accounts for more than 8,000 pages of input and analysis, and close to 100 events across the EU and the world on the theme of the EU and human rights. The website notably offers a browsing function which conveniently allows to search for specific keywords through project reports and therefore collect cutting edge research on specific issues.
On 26 April 2017, the FRAME final conference will be held at the Royal Academy in Brussels. This event will gather a large number of participants, among which EU officials, practitioners, academics and civil society members, around themes linked to the EU and human rights. On this occasion, the FRAME outcome document will be presented, which outlines the main findings and list key recommendations for the EU institutions and bodies. The Conference will notably feature keynote addresses by Morten Kjaerum (Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights), Herman Van Rompuy (Former President of the European Council), Michael O’Flaherty (Director of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency), and Stavros Lambrinidis (EU Special Representative on Human Rights). Other speakers include Olivier de Schutter (Professor of Law, University of Louvain), Manfred Nowak (Professor of International Law and Human Rights, University of Vienna), Karen Smith (Professor of International Relations, London School of Economics), Jan Wouters (Professor of International Law and International Organizations, KU Leuven) and many more.
The FRAME conference will be followed by the annual AHRI conference on 27-28 April 2017 in Leuven. The Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI), is a network of 59 member institutions that carries out research and educational activities in the field of human rights. The member institutions are from 33 different countries. This conference focuses on 'The Promotion and Enforcement of Human Rights by International and Regional Organizations', and more than 80 papers will be presented in 23 panels.
