April MOOCs on EU Events

Back in 2011, when two professors from Stanford University decided to offer a free online course about Artificial Intelligence, they expected a few thousand students at the most to enroll, but by the start of the class they have more than 160.000 persons who wanted to attend the course.

Today, Massive Online Open Courses are very popular and there are several platforms offering online courses for free. Most MOOCS are modeled on traditional course materials, learning theories and higher education teaching methods. Coursera, Edx, Open2Study and Canvas are only some of the most popular MOOC providers.

In Europe, we can count on several  online educational platforms:

  • Iversity is a Berlin-based platform that collaborates with European Universities and individual professors.

  • OpenClassrooms is one of the leading French platform for vocational training.

  • FutureLearn is the first UK-led mooc learning platform that collaborates with several leading English and international universities.

  • Eliademy is a Finnish free online platform that allows educators to create and share online courses.

  • Fun is a French platform hosting MOOCS developed by French higher education institutions.

OpenUpEd, supported by the European Commission, is the first Pan-European Mooc Iniciative, including partners from at least 11 countries.

OUR SELECTION OF EU MOOCS

UNDERSTANDING EUROPE: WHY IT MATTERS AND WHAT IT CAN OFFER YOU

Providers: HEC PARIS/Coursera

About this course: While the EU is often depicted as a monstrous bureaucratic creature, condemned to irrelevance by the emerging economies, in 50 years it accomplished what other countries took centuries to realize. The EU remains the most accomplished experiment of economic, social and political integration in human history. Regardless of where you live, the European Union not only affects your life, but may also transform it. By learning how Europe works, a new world will open up to you and discover new jobs you never heard of. The European Union has a large, yet often unnoticed, impact on many aspects of everybody’s life. The course will analyze what the EU is doing for YOU regardless of where you live.

Enrollment ends: 2 April

Languages: English/French

The series ranges from considering the basic structures and principles of the European Union to focusing on various specialized areas of law. Each course will give the students an understanding of the laws and policies that regulate the internal market of European Union, as well as relevant case law and useful inputs from leading practitioners in the field.

WHY THE EUROPEAN UNION? A BRIEF HISTORY OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

Providers: Univesitat Pompeu Fabra/Future Learn

About this course: On-going European crises have led to a state of confusion about the politics and purpose of the European Union (EU). Many EU citizens have discovered that what they believed the EU was for does not match what EU institutions are actually doing.

The lack of proper knowledge about the origins, evolving nature and purpose of European integration is, to a large extent, responsible for many present-day EU problems. This course will help answer many common questions about the EU by:

  • exploring the history of the EU

  • explaining how the set of institutions that form the EU emerged

  • examining how the purpose of European integration has changed since the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community.

Start dates: 4 April /20 June

SCOTLAND AND WALES VOTE 2016: UNDERSTANDING THE DEVOLVED ELECTIONS

Providers: The University of Edinburgh/Future Learn

About the course: 2016 is an exciting year for elections in the United Kingdom. Towards the end of the year we might have a referendum on the UK’s EU membership, but we definitely know that there will be elections to the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly in May. Both of these institutions have a significant impact on people’s lives in Scotland and Wales: they control big public policy issues like health, education and transport. This unique, real-time course responds to real world events and your feedback about what you want to focus on.

Start date: 18 April
